Prof. Robert Martin began his academic trajectory at Oxford University with a bachelor’s degree in zoology, followed by a Ph.D. in animal behaviour, and his subsequent career has been devoted to exploring the evolution of primates. His research has focused on their distribution over time, their geographical spread and their significance for human evolution. During his long academic career Prof. Martin has held consecutive senior positions at the University of London (Professor, 1969-1986), the University of Zürich (Director of the Anthropological Institute, 1986-2001) and the Field Museum in Chicago, USA (Vice-President and Curator of Biological Anthropology, 2001-2013). Since 2014 he has been an Academic Guest at the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zürich. Over the course of his career he has produced over 300 scientific publications, including his academic monograph Primate Origins (1990) and a book in German for the general public Alles Begann mit Sex (2015).
